DIY Essential Oil Reed Diffuser

I love for my house to smell great. I used to buy lots of scented candles, scented plug ins and smelly gel things from the grocery store. Then I wised up! Those things all have one thing in common. Artificial fragrance oils.

Fragrance oils can contain various combinations of asamines, ethers, ketones, lactones, terpenes and thiones. They also often contain benzene and aldehydes.

These chemical compounds take their toll on your health. They can cause cancer, birth defects, disorders of the central nervous system, neurological disorders and allergic reactions. [source]

That’s not okay with me!  Now I scent my home naturally. I learned to make my own scented tart warmers out of beeswax, stovetop potpourri, and I made my own DIY reed diffuser with bamboo skewers and essential oils.

Want one of your own?

You will need:

  • Pour the carrier oil into your glass vessel using the funnel.
  • Add the essential oils of your choice.
  • Put the reeds or skewers into the vessel and stir the oil and essential oils together.
  • Submerge the reeds or skewers in the oil for several hours or until the oil has traveled up the reed.
  • Flip the reeds or skewers.

  • When the scent becomes less noticeable, flip the reeds or skewers
  • Use a narrow mouthed vessel to slow down evaporation
  • When the scent completely evaporates, add more oils

  1. Stopping in from the SITS linkup! This is a great idea! I love making my own stuff so I know exactly what’s in the products used around my house. Thanks for the post:)

  2. Hello:
I’m trying to make my own essential reed diffuser oil and so far nothing is working. I use 10 drops of lavender essential oil, 4 tablespoons of sweet almond oil, a glass jar and five reeds. My question is what type of reeds should i use? some people say i should use diffuser reeds others say i should use bamboo reeds BUT according to other blogs they say that bamboo does not do a good job like a regular diffuser reeds. What should I do? and one more thing; should I use wodka ? or rubbing alcohol? (what grade 70,90 ?) if the answer is yes how many spoons?
    Thank you!
