Everyday Essential Oils: Joy

Joy is my very favorite oil blend in Young Living’s Everyday Oil Collection, and the first oil I had to reorder, which is actually kind of hilarious.

Love at First Smell? NOPE!

The first time I ever smelled it, I recoiled. I told my teen it smelled like “old lady perfume”.  Now I know that I was smelling the geranium note in the blend, a very powerful mood-supporting oil. Rumor has it that when our bodies are in need of something a particular oil has to offer us, it will smell terrible to us! I don’t know how much truth there is to that, but if that is the case, that makes total sense to me.

The Missing Link

If you have been following my blog for any time at all, you may know that over the course of my life I have used a variety of conventional (medication and counseling) as well as holistic (diet, exercise, earthing, herbs) methods to manage my moods, but I consider essential oils to be the “missing link” in that equation and Joy is now an important part in my daily “Mental Hygiene” regimen.

How Can Essential Oils Affect Our Moods?

Essential oil molecules travel through the nasal passages to the limbic brain, specifically the hypothalamus. “The hypothalamus controls body temperature, hunger, important aspects of parenting and attachment behaviors, thirst, fatigue, sleep, and circadian rhythms.” [source]  If you smell an essential oil that has a calming effect on the body, and the hypothalamus receives the input to relax, then it creates neurochemicals that are sent through the body to relax and calm. Likewise if an essential oil has an uplifting vibration, then the limbic system will respond by sending the message to energize and become more active. In this way, our moods can be affected.

The Joy blend of essential oils is made up of oils that both uplift and relax, and some even are purported to have aphrodisiac qualities! (Ooh la la)

According to the Essential Oils Pocket Reference: “This beautiful blend produces a magnetic energy that brings joy to the heart, mind, and soul.”

All I know is, when I smell it, I feel better.

Joy is made up of ten essential oils:

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)

It is refreshing and uplifting and can support a healthy emotional state.

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata)

Increases relaxation; balances male and female energies. It also restores confidence and equilibrium.

Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

Can help release negative emotions so that joy can be attained.

Lemon (Citrus limon)

Has antiseptic (for cleaning) properties. It is purifying and uplifting. A 1995 Mie University study documented the ability of citrus fragrances to reduce depression, induce relaxation and boost immunity.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum)

Soothing and calming.

Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)

Is emotionally uplifting.

Jasmine (Jasminum officinale)

Revitalizes the spirit and induces feelings of love, support and joy. It is used to relieve sorrow and nervous exhaustion.

Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)

Calms restlessness, tension and poor sleep. May help release mental blocks.

Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii)

It helps reduce nervous tension and anxiety and is purported to bring about feelings of security.

Rose (Rosa damascena)

Rose oil has the highest frequency of any essential oil.  It is stimulating to the mind and creates a sense of well being. Traditionally used to attract love.
